Eight apprentice electricians have been chosen to compete for the title of best young electrician in the UK at the SkillELECTRIC final in November.
Matthew Buckley, Patrick Carr, Stuart Graham, Steven Harper, Garin Long, Thomas Seward, Sean Simpson and Luke Sheild will go head to head in the two-day final at the NEC Arena in Birmingham, which is held as part of the Skills Show.
During the final, they will complete a number of tasks and practical tests based on the workplace scenarios faced by electricians, with the winner having the chance to represent the UK at the biennial WorldSkills event – the world’s largest skills competition – in Kazan in 2019.
The eight finalists won their places as a result of their performance in the SkillELECTRIC regional heats, where they completed a five hour electrical installation challenge against a number of high-performing apprentices from their local area.
Jon Dicken, Technical Development Manager at NET, which organises the SkillELECTRIC competition in partnership with WorldSkills UK, said: “Our eight finalists represent the best of the UK’s electrical apprentices – and they’ve proved that by showcasing their technical prowess and professional competence during the regional heats. I wish them well in the final in November.”
