The introduction of the new AM2 in April this year has proved to be a real success and the updated assessment of occupational competence for our industry has been well received by centres, candidates and the industry alike. National Electrotechnical Training (NET) now has the opportunity, with a brand new marking system, to examine trends related to the AM2 in far greater depth than was previously possible, and felt it important to feed this information back to the industry.

The electrical industry has thrown its full weight behind the new AM2 Assessment of Occupational Competence (AOC), launched this month by NET (National Electrotechnical Training). The Joint Industry Board (JIB), Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA), Electrotechnical Assessment Scheme (EAS) Management Committee and the Sector Skills Council, SummitSkills have all backed the new assessment, recognising it as the electrical industry’s benchmark for an individual’s competence.

National Electrotechnical Training (NET) held an AM2 examiners’ conference earlier this month, with forty AM2 centres attending to discuss the proposed new AM2 assessment, and ways in which it could be improved and implemented.

NET Business Development Manager, Stephen Plant, said: “The AM2 assessment has a strong history, and is seen by the industry as the ‘gold standard’ in certifying practical competency. To maintain industry standards, it is essential that the test is updated to reflect current working practises, materials, challenges and legislation.”

National Electrotechnical Training (NET) has introduced an innovative solution to the ongoing industry issue of electrical apprentices having to wait up to a year to take their AM2 test. NET has worked with GTEC Training to develop a mobile test centrre, which can travel to the 'hotspot' areas in England and Wales where AM2 centres are struggling to meet high demand for the test and reduce backlogged waiting lists.

National Electrotechnical Training (NET) has appointed Stephen Plant as Business Development Manager, following a full-scale review of the NET AM2/FICA Assessments of Occupational Competence (AOC). Stephen will oversee the development and implementation of the revised assessments throughout NET’s 44 licensed assessment centres located across the UK. He will act as NET’s principal contact point, providing expert support, guidance and advice whenever it is needed.
